The first thing to try is cleaning the fan with compressed "air" (gas). Use
the straw and aim it through the fan vents (with the ThinkPad powered off).
You should be able to spin up the fan - that won't hurt it.

It's possible that this is all it needs, and it's a good thing to do
regularly anyway.
