(1) The most likely cause of you system freeze is thermal (especially if the
fan is running when it freezes). If it is due to failing thermal grease on
the CPU, then the failure will take place before the box gets hot. Get a
temp monitoring program (like Thinkpad Fan Control) to see what specifically
is running hot, meanwhile blow out your fan with some canned "air".
(2) The dark display could be the lid switch, misseated wires, or a dying
inverter. Check them in that order.
(3) The display that shows pink for a while is a dying backlight.
