You have definitely tried to troubleshoot this problem in the proper manner,
and have covered all the usual suspects that can cause this problem. You can
try removing the heatsink/fan assembly from the CPU, cleaning up the old
thermal grease and applying some new grease, but from my experience this
isn't going to fix it. When these systems start freezing like this, the
systemboard is 'flakey' and the only fix is a systemboard replacement. I
have had MANY T2x series machines that eventually develop this symptom, and
that has been the only fix I have found.

Hello guys,
I have three T21-Thinkpads with three different error-descriptions, this
one here is 1/3:
_Description:______________#1: T21-800 freezes____________________________
The T21 in question boots, works fine, but after an unrecognized period of
time freezes. This results in the system "hanging" with the ventilation on.
However, I can not find any hot area besides the usual one: the HDD.
This is what I have tried so far:
- reinstalled the entire WinXP SP3 system
- removed/replaced RAM -> no result, system also hangs with other RAM
- removed modem/lan card-> no result, system also hangs without that card
- removed dvd-drive -> no result, system also hangs without that drive
- tore T21 apart and cleaned the ventilation-unit -> nothing changed either
Another thing that I recognized today is that the system does not run
smoothly, two examples:
1) If you move the mouse, the mouse sometimes stops its move and then
appears where it should arrive. Means: It does not move smoothly, it
jumps.
2) If I run any Win-XP-default-screensaver, I see that the system stops
just as with the mouse and then continues.
What I want to say is that this system starts to run "flocky" after some
while as if it would lose its correct "heart-beat". This odd behaviour
begins after approx. one hour running-time. The machine runs more and
more delayed and finally the ventilation starts and the system freezes.
More and more I have the feeling that this is not a temperature or (over-)
heating issue, but a problem with the internal BUS.
I hope you understand my humble description.
What can I do to solve this problem? Which FRU part numbers are to change?
I hope you can help me out and thank you in advance.
Many greetings!

I agree, this is also a problem with some of the A range.
Its due to warping of the memory slot plastics causing the solder
connections to the motherboard to disconnect.
Reflowing of the solder cures this.
You need experience in doing this .
On the A 21 you can get to these solder connections without dismantling
the thinkpad.
Hope this helps.
