I did something similar to your suggestion: I removed the hard drive from the dead computer and connected it to an old desktop of mine. I just unplugged the CD drive and moved the cables to the hard disk with it sitting on top of the open frame. I was then able to copy the data files to my desktop's hard drive, and transfer them to my ThinkPad A31 over my network, where I burned them to a CD. I'm amazed the old hard drive was still working: it was a Quantum Bigfoot, a 5 1/4" drive with an IDE interface -- only one I've ever seen.

The owner was most grateful -- she had years of work on her family genealogy she almost lost.
