I've heard those horror stories as well. However I have nevertheless booted
up my 600X with two almost identical XP drives installed (one in the main
HDD slot and the other in a secondary adapter) without running into this
problem. I used F12 to swap back and forth from booting from one to booting
from the other. In my case, the drives were identical in size as well as
configuration: one was just an clone from a couple weeks earlier.

But apparently there are risks involved in doing this, and I would not do it
with someone else's machine or without having another backup of the drive
handy in case of disaster.

Phil.
