As a matter of fact I used the the thinkvantage system updater to download the drivers and install them. Although I upgrade the touchpad driver to the newest version (13.***) and I got a newer version of the wireless driver from the intel site (12.***) > For the 'My Documents' (et al) directories, have you checked to see the > permissions on them are correct for your profile (e.g., your account or > group that you are a member of has full rights). I will double check but I run as an administrator anyway so I should have access to the whole system. I partitioned my HDD similar to the way Linux drives are done, with the /root /home /swap concept. I have found it is easier if I decide to nuke the installation, I don't have to worry about figuring where to stick my data while I reinstall. > > I have seen slow shutdowns occur because of problems with video, power, > RAID, backup agent and network management programs failing to shut down > properly, as well as with anti-virus drivers and services. I haven't gotten around to writing my backup scripts yet so nothing running in the middle of the night to check. I used the system updater to configure my video card. I am going to uninstall spybot in a few days as I was told in this thread I believe that it's basically a cookie remover, and I'm better off with Defender and a few others. > > If you are using any tools to customize the Windows shell (skinning and > Windows Explorer replacements, for example) try uninstalling them. I do use the Zune theme for my windows theme, and a program called windowsFX which basically mimics Aero for XP. I haven't thought about those, will try and see if they are the culprit. > > > Oh, if you made a custom installation of Microsoft Windows XP using one > of the programs like nLite or XPlite, try using the original ThinkPad's > installation of Windows XP, instead. > I nuked that installation first. I then reinstalled using a standard Windows XP Pro Disk. I will do this last as it took a long time to get the system to where I wanted it. I didn't even bother with the XP pro install from Lenovo, although I did leave that small 4GB partition in place just in case. Thanks for the help. I have so far uninstalled IE 8 and both problems have disappeared. I am going to leave the laptop running for a few days and only do hibernation and no restarts. I think the first post reported that some of the problems could be related to IE8 and that was the easiest thing to check first so I went there. Will let you know, but aggravatingly, it looks like IE8 was the culprit, at least for the explorer.exe starting and shutting down with no notifications. > > Regards, > > Aryeh Goretsky > > > At 07:19 PM 8/1/2009, you wrote: > >> Message: 1 >> Date: Sat, 1 Aug 2009 15:43:17 -0400 >> From: John Toliver <[email protected]> >> Subject: [Thinkpad] Windows Explorer very sluggish or stops responding >> To: thinkpad <[email protected]> >> Message-ID: >> <[email protected]> >> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 >> >> I have had my new Thinkpad T43 for about a month now.
