Genuine T40-series batteries show up at the Lenovo outlet every so often for
under $50.
However, if you are in a hurry you could look at the batteries at
dealextreme. We had good luck with a T23 battery from them, and SKU 27785
seems to be from the same manufacturer.

Subject: [Thinkpad] Looking to tips on a replacement battery for a T43...
I went looking on ebay for a good standard battery for My T43. I've
purchased before and been disappointed. I was wondering if a secret
existed
for knowing what to look for in the ad. Perhaps wording that someone
selling a genuine battery would place in the ad to attract people. I was
hoping to get 2-3 hours on the charge if I bought new and maybe 1:30 from
a
working pull. Is this a realistic expectation from a battery.
I just don't want to buy a battery that holds a 3 hour charge for a month
and then suddenly won't run the machine more than 30 minutes.

I've discovered the key to success is to never give up. You either learn
