FWIW, I had a flawless [full] x64 install on a T61p. The only thing that didn't get picked up was the Biometric Copro, which installed OK with the Fingerprint software. That was the only non-included driver I had to deal with.
I also have a S10 that I replaced my HDD with a 64GB SSD - that also had no problems. There were a couple of drivers that were required via Windows Update. I don't think I had to get anything from Lenovo, but it was a couple of months ago so don't quote me on that. What is interesting too is that the machine runs Areo just fine... got a 2.0 rating on the new scale. Battery life is around 3-4 hours depending on what's open; boots in under 20 seconds. I got a 120GB OCZ Vertex SSD to replace my 100GB Hitachi 7200 RPM Drive. SSD is still a little expensive but are coming down in price. The 120GB OCZ Vertex SSD has good reviews and does not suffer from the stutter problem. I am also going with the 64 bit version of Windows 7. It is a wise decision to use a new HD because a requirement to "upgrade" from XP to Windows 7 is to backup on an external hard drive and wipe the computer's HD. > > I updated the Bios to Version 2.26 from 2.24 since the new version said Windows 7 support. > > I had a few problems. After the inital part of the install I came up with a 2100 Error. The connector on the SSD is not as long as the old drive so I trimed down the connector side of the rubber mounts slightly as suggested online. That did not fix it. The 2100 error only happens on reboot. If I power off then on, it boots okay. The problem went away after Windows 7 was installed. > > The install is better than XP or Vista. I did not use the full disk since I will be installing Linux. There is a simplified HD setup tool in the installer. > > The SSD is very quiet and seems to perform okay. Windows 7 (and the Linux 2.6.28 kernel) uses the TRIM command to indicate to the SSD which blocks are not being used. > > Of course the next fun stage was downloading all the Windows 7 drivers for the T61. I got an error when I tried to install the fingerprint software. It did seem to install through System Update 4.0. It looks like some Thinkvantage utilities are still in Beta. I use Access Connections the most but I will give the built-in Windows 7 stuff a go. There is a "home" network and "office" network configurations. When I connected the laptop at home it detected that the network was different from the office network I used earlier. > > I got some basic apps on the T61 but need to spend the weekend installing and using. > > 73 Eric > _______________________________________________ > Thinkpad mailing list > [email protected] > http://stderr.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/thinkpad > _______________________________________________ Thinkpad mailing list [email protected] http://stderr.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/thinkpad _______________________________________________ Thinkpad mailing list [email protected] http://stderr.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/thinkpad
