A couple weeks ago I bought a Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB 7200RPM drive. It vibrated pretty badly and went right back to the store. (The drive was very quiet, however. Almost unsettlingly quiet.) I haven't bought a replacement yet, so I'd like suggestions too.
I had a similar experience (disturbing vibrations when TP on a hard surface, like a wooden table) several years ago with a 7200 rpm Hitachi drive, and I've kept clear of 7200 rpm drives ever since. For my typical needs, I believe the difference between 5400 and 7200 rpm is marginal anyway, and my gut feeling is that a faster-spinning drive is more likely to fail. I've been a happy camper with 5400 rpm Seagate drives (Momentus).
