Thank you both for the suggestions. I did in fact install System
Update 4 and applied what it found. Running it right now, it tells me
there are 0 Critical Updates and 2 Recommended updates, one for
Soundmax Audio Software and the other for ThinkVantage Active
Protection System. In both cases it says there's "No previous version
installed." which surprises me, and I'll go ahead and install them.

When I had this freeze-up problem originally (a year ago), it happened
sometimes when I was working, sometimes it would happen when it was
asleep, and sometimes (among many situations) I'd leave it with TiVo
Desktop running (copying files from my TiVo to my notebook) and I
would come back to see the wireless light flashing madly on the X300,
but no activity on the router. The TiVo thing wasn't the only
situation, but it was weird the WiFi light was flashing so much on the
notebook.

Lenovo/IBM told me they wouldn't service it unless either the
Hardware Diagnostics program reported a problem, or if the problem
occurred with only the factory install loaded. After going back to my
T41p and wiping the X300 clean, I installed from the Recovery Disks
and left the machine running for days. There was no problem, though of
course I wasn't doing anything.

I had read a year ago that some people were suspicious of the side USB
ports, so I hooked up a bus-powered HD and even then it didn't lock
up.

Yesterday when it locked up (and it did it again after I posted), I
did have a USB-powered HD connected, though the lockup only happened
when I tried to wake the X300 up after leaving it for a while.

Not sure there's a connection. And not sure what to do, since I
realize that if I can't reproduce the problem with only the factory
install, chances are they won't be able to either. :(

Thanks for the advice.
