Okay, I seem to have gotten this fixed. I removed all the low battery alarms and let the machine run on battery all the way to lights-out and now all seems fine with the battery gauge and charge indicator telling me that all is now well. I guess the charge monitoring chip in the battery lost its bearings and it got reset when it saw the bottom of the barrel.
