Agreed, backlight (CCFL) is failing. Although the backlight itself can be replaced, it's somewhat of a PITA job, and you're much better off picking up an entire LCD or a complete assembly on TPF or fleabay for $50 or so...

The display was dark before I replaced the inverter with a new (supposedly) replacement. Plugging the T42 into a external display results in a normal appearing screen.
