Hi,
A while back the following note was posted and I had saved it -- in
case... So now that I have the problem... if I may inquire further...
My wife's T42's screen has been fading, so first guess I ordered a new
inverter and replaced that - no change... Now I'm going to look for a
new backlight. But while I still have it apart from replacing the
inverter, I was looking and couldn't see where the backlight might
be.... I'm suspecting "plug in new one" isn't quite as simple as
that.. For those of you who have replaced a backlight, any thoughts,
advice, suggestions?
Also, for a backlight, do I even care if it's an SXGA+?
Thanks for any thoughts or advice...

Replacing the backlight and inverter is not a bad job... Get the right
parts... there are two and usually run for less than $25 on eBay. But be
certain you get new ones, and not used ones. They are $75 or so from the
set at Lenovo.
The trick is the cosmetics... making it look good... And to have a workbench
for the removal process where you wont be disturbed if you have to quit and
startup again the next day.
Take off the keyboard, and remove the cable from the base to the screen
assembly.
There are 18 to 24 screws to remove of various small sizes. Most are
covered with rubberized screw covers that make them nearly impossible to
find and remove unless you are patient. There are different sizes so map
them as you go... just draw a simple location map.
Use some soft of tweezers and a sharp tool to remove the screw covers
without damaging them. Some compound found in hardware stores called
De-Solve-It along with some denatured alcohol will be useful... if no
De-Solve-It is available where you are, use a similar oil based compound to
remove the sticky rubber cement.
Once you get all the screws out, the screen easily comes apart. You unplug
the bad inverter and bad backlight, and plug in new ones.
Next is the simple job of reassembly. Once done with all the screws, test a
couple of hours to make sure it works, and looks great.
Once comfortable that you have success, begin the slow job of replacing the
screw covers with a razor blade or other sharp tool... using your favorite
rubber cement.
My first one on a Thinkpad took two hours. Now I can do them in a half hour
to 45 minutes... and they get prettier each time.
You can also buy screw covers on eBay, but a prefer making my own out of
very thin sheets of rubberized material. You will need to experiment.
You will find you need to experiment with the screw cover material until you
get it right, so don't plan on doing the first job quickly. You are
guaranteed to make a few mistakes. You can also use a tube of rubberized
cement material but it doesn't look as good when i do it.
Once you get good, you can get rich doing them.

Thanks.
I've never replaced a backlight - it doesn't sound fun.

Agreed, backlight (CCFL) is failing. Although the backlight itself can be
replaced, it's somewhat of a PITA job, and you're much better off picking
up
an entire LCD or a complete assembly on TPF or fleabay for $50 or so...

Subject: [Thinkpad] ailing T42 - LCD display is biased towards red
Hello:
Can someone give me a hint as to what is going on with a friend's T42
(23780-DUU)?
The LCD display is fairly dim and the start-up screen for WinXP looks
as if one is viewing through a red-tinted screen.
The display was dark before I replaced the inverter with a new
(supposedly) replacement. Plugging the T42 into a external display
results in a normal appearing screen.
Thanks,
Mitchell
