For the last several years, my family has been using T4x machines. All of the machines are out of warranty, and each has been exhibiting various problems that make me think it is time to upgrade them. In general, we've been pretty happy with the T4x machines, so moving up to a successor seems like the easiest thing to do. In looking at the latest Thinkpad lineup, it looks like the T400 is the current step in that line.

Any thoughts on whether the T400 is the best replacement? One machine will be used by a college student, one by a high school student going to college next year, and one will be used by my wife. None of the machines will be treated particularly gently, so getting the extended warranty will be highly desirable.

Any other pluses or minuses I should be thinking about?

Thanks for any help.
