Well, you actually have a choice of what you want Fn+F3 to do which is set up
the first time you apply the combination, at least that was the case on my W500
with Vista Business 32-bit.

Most of my other ThinkPads run Linux and Fn+F3 can still be used to dim the
LCD, while Fn+F7 swaps the LCD/monitor/both.

Cheers,

George

and on evenmore recent TP's the Fn+F3 now launches the thinkvantage
powermanagement utility.

I haven't owned a 600 series in quite a while, so my memory is dim in regards
to their Fn buttons, but on later ThinkPads Fn+F7 switches between external
monitor and LCD, while Fn+F3 shuts down the LCD.

On my 600s the command is FnF7 not FnF3. Why was
it changed and does the FnF3 function differ somehow
from the former one?
