Hello,

Intel CPUs have a technology called SpeedStep which dynamically adjusts
the processor speed depending upon whether it is operating on battery or
AC line power. From what I recall, Windows XP has support for this
technology embedded in it, but a driver is required for older versions
of Microsoft Windows.

I am not sure why your T42 is operating at the slower speed, but you could
try installing Christian Diefer's SpeedSwitchXP utility and see if it can
enable the higher clock speed. It can downloaded from the author's web
site at http://www.diefer.de/speedswitchxp/index.html.

Hi,

I have a Thinkpad T42, 1.7Ghz which according to My Computer->Properties
and msinfo32 is only running at a CPU speed of 599Mhz.

Setting cpu speed to 'max performance' (battery and mains power) in the
Thinkpad Power manager has no effect.

Setting cpu to 'max performance' (battery and mains power) in the BIOS
seemed to work for a while, but now I'm seeing 599Mhz again.

I need to resolve this problem to get AVG antivirus to look at a CPU
usage problem I have - they say at least 1.5Ghz is required for AVG 9.

Chris
