First and foremost, to avoid the GPU problem, always lift the machine with 
both hands.

If possible, never and I mean NEVER let it go to sleep or shut it off, just 
turn the LCD off when not in use.

You can also try ThinkPad Fan Control, a lot of users are quite happy with it.

There is a set temp at which the system will cut CPU speed, and a slightly 
higher temp at which it shuts down. Mobilemeter reports these are 88.5 and 93 
C, 
respectively.  Is there a reasonable way to reset these? I'd like to lower the 
first temp to stay clear of the T4x GPU issue and keep the machine a bit 
further 
from accelerated aging.
