Just one more question if you don't mind. Is the new cable a complete USB to parallel all in none, or the Belkin type with a removable centronics plug at the end? If the type with removable end, and you can use it's core alone with other USB devices properly, then I'd suspect the cable's centronic's adapter as well.
Last time I installed one of these, was a Belkin, and I recall having to install the printer driver, then the Belkin adapter, then assign the Belkin USB port to the printer.
