I use gmail as I don't have an isp. I use whomever I can connect with as I travel too much. I have a home isp that I do work for now and again and I have a web page and an e mail address from them that is a free bee for the work I do but g mail can't go wrong.

So, the nice thing about getting your own domain and using it with Google is that you get all the benefits of Gmail (spam filter, web interface, still works with POP clients, etc.) -- PLUS, by using your own domain, you're not going to be stuck with an @gmail.com address.
