The current repair sheet discusses whether they will wipe your drive or not.
You can indicate that you do not want your drive reimaged.

In my case, the HD was certainly one of the issues so I did want to send it
back. I did have a backup. I paid for an XP downgrade when I ordered the
T400 and the machine returned with XP SP 2 on it, so it did come back with
the correct OS. It did have some different software on it than it did when
new in June 09, such as Roxio business CD/DVD software.

They were very fast at turning the machine around and the boxes are
brilliant, even including tape to seal the box. It left on Tuesday and was
back on Thursday. [It was not, however, correctly diagnosed, so it is
returning again for a brain transplant.]
