Thanks to all for the several suggestions for regaining T43 wireless
connection to an encrypted gateway; here are our results. We were almost
finished with our planned series of remedial steps when we queried this list
for suggestions. For example, we had already removed IBM Access
Connections, but we had used Revo Uninstaller, which monitors the software's
own uninstall process and cleans up all the remaining detritus from
incomplete built-in uninstall routines. Also, none of several Microsoft
Windows updates had fixed the problem. The next step in our list was to
upgrade to SP3, as also recommended here, so we downloaded from the
Microsoft site and burned xpsp3_5512.080413-2113_usa_x86fre_spcd.iso to CD
and downloaded WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe; but both repeatedly
halted with messages that files were corrupted. We were finally able to
download a clean version of WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe, which
completed execution; the system rebooted and connected to the wireless
gateway quickly and without issues. Thanks to all for your help.
