If you already have a high enough version of {X,K,ED}ubuntu (say after 9.10) then you can install the LXDE package from the Synaptec package manager, then have a login-time option between LXDE, Openbox, and your original installation(s). (The choice appears at the bottom after you type in your name but before you type in your password.) This gives anyone an easy way to test it out. If you don't see the network configuration option at the desktop or in the menu, you can add network manager as a desktop option from within Lubuntu.

Any version of Ubuntu from 9.10 onward loads very fast on most ThinkPads (I recently updated from hardy Heron to Karmic Koala on my X61t, and the speedup is palpable). Also, from 9.10 onwards you can install and run the Ubuntu Tweak application (http://ubuntu-tweak.com/), which makes some tasks a bit more transparent for newbies.

Subject: [Thinkpad] Lubuntu

Hi

I just wanted to say thanks for the Lubuntu suggestion. Its fast.

Installed it last night only took a couple of hours via normal installer vs Ubuntu and Xubuntu which took about 4 hours via the alternative installer as the normal installer wouldnt run.

Lubuntu is fast, even on my P2 300mhz with 296MB RAM. Chromium browser opens within two or three seconds and rips from page to page at an amazing speed.

Plus it has all the benefits of a Ubuntu base like all my hardware being detected straight away including wireless card.

So far so good. A new install means setting up sound again but so far so wow!

Very impressed.

Simon
