Ubuntu and Windows 7 both work very well in 64 bit versions on our X61t and X201t. I'm not sure what one is trying to avoid by going with the 32 bit version. The Virtual XP machine that you can get for free with W7 professional, enterprise, and ultimate handles seamlessly the few programs with issues.

I run Ubuntu both in a virtual box window and as a Wubi dual-boot (see http://wubi.sourceforge.net/). The latter is useful if you are worried that a particular version will not run correctly.
