If you really want to do this over the net, your safest bet is to run an sftp server/client arrangement. Filezilla server is pretty easy to set up, and can be set up so as to only expose one directory to the net.

I don't think you can do that without some kind of server or FTP server, or use PC Anywhere which will let you in.

You could possibly make your computer into a DMZ on the router and then it might be accessible, but that is WAY dangerous. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeffrey Race" <[email protected]>

Subject: [Thinkpad] Help pls on remote file access

My friend's T40 crashed and I took the machine to IBM
but it is non-repairable. He wants to access his files
(he lives in another city) and I've put his HDD in my
drive tray on my T43 where it appears as Drive L which
I've set to share in WXP. But I can't figure out how to
make it as a shared folder on his (remote) computer so he
can transfer the files by accessing my external IP address.
I tried NATting my local T43's local IP address to Port 9000
on my external IP address but that doesn't seem to let him
in. Please tell me what to do or what to read. Googling
"remote file access" brings up a lot of proprietary
solutions which don't seem to be right for our requirement
tks for all help jeffrey race
