Just hook the printer into the ThinkPad and enable sharing.
No Linux or software required.
Same with the hard drive or any add on USB drives, just enable sharing on the drive. It won't be visible outside your network, unless you set the ip to DMZ on your router (NOT a good idea).

As to leaving it running:
GO AHEAD
I run an X31 and an X32 24/7 as a scanner server, and as well I have a T400 running 24/7 as a video server for Zumo on my iPod Touch. The ONLY issue is to shoot some compressed air into the fan from time to time as dust will collect. All three are in a fairly compressed space in the same room behind a closed door. The X31 has been running this way for over 2 years. ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Ross" <[email protected]>

Subject: [Thinkpad] Using TP as a wireless print server/NAS

Like many on this list I have several ThinkPads of various vintages lying around the house. Since my old wireless print server died, I would like to turn one of the machines, an X30, into a dedicated print server, and possibly NAS device (I have several USB drives). So, two questions: (1) Does anyone have software suggestions for this? It can run under any OS that will run on the X30, and should be willing to serve to both Windows and Linux. (2) Can anyone see any problem with running the X30 24/7 with the screen off in a well-ventilated space? I think I can underclock the CPU.

David
