She'd be pleased to buy a real WXP (maybe Pro like the
version on my T43) (in fact thought that was what she
was getting when she bought the Acer).

Questions:

(1) What should she buy on ebay? I see discs that
came with Dell etc. Are they installable on different
vendor? Or have to buy something else and if so how
specified?

(2) How does one do the install to preserve her
profiles and not wipe all the data on the drive?

(3) Gotchas?

Tks for all help.

One of the cheaper places for XP is tek-micro.com:

I think this is what 9software.com was, or tek bought them. These folks
sell 'gray market' stuff, which is perfectly legal. The price today is about
$98. I'm not sure you can get a better price, unless you can get academic
pricing.

Ebay stuff, if you can verify its real, is good but I don't know how you do
that. Mostly, Dell disks will work on any machine but I wouldn't state that
categorically. Long ago I gave up on any kind of update or grafting of any
version of Windows on another. Me, I'd preserve all the data and do a
clean install, but I'm likely in the minority on this.
