I have a little more to add.

When it goes black, I tried the control alt delete and the computer did not change.

I then put the screen down and put it to sleep and when I put the screen back up
the display showed the task manager.

So, I'm starting to wonder if I have a bad screen, or something else?

IN any event I will probably have to send it back, but I want to ensure there's nothing software
that could be causing this.

I got ahold of a refurbed T60 this week for my girlfriend.

It works fine, but it will randomly just turn off the display while I am
actively using it.

Look carefully at the screen while shining a light source on it. Do something noticeable like moving windows around or flipping between applications (i.e. alt-tab). You might see an image, in which case it's really the backlight that's failing.

Sometimes when it does this, if I try to put the screen down it will not
sleep. Other
times it will sleep fine. I have found no way to just make it come back on.

It is running Windows XP. Any ideas?

I appreciate it.
