My own experiences mirror what Chris had stated - never bricked a ThinkPad 
while updating the BIOS.

I have bricked a couple with BIOS hacks, though - but that's a whole another 
matter.

I stay away from firmware updates if the device performs well, unless it's a 
hard drive.

YMMV.

I've been updating my ThinkPads' BIOS since 1993 every time I notice 
a new one. Never bricked a machine once.
