Yes hard drive firmware updates can be essential sometimes like the 2tb Samsung ecogreen
that i bought which had some data loss bug solved by a firmware update.

There is a firmware update for the T60 hard drive on the Lenovo web site.
Of course the hard drive in a 5 year old laptop could be a replacement so I think i would be better looking at the HDs manufacturers web site to see if there are any firmware
updates required.
