OK good idea but I have no such CD or way to make one.

Could I download something to a thumb drive?  If so please advise
where and what is the minimum to put on the thumb drive to get to
a prompt to xcopy.  (The Acer can boot from a USB Cd.)

Cannot boot the machine; that is the problem; error is
 "Hive Is Missing or Damaged"

Does this appear if I run the WXP Pro install CD?
