You can download them from many places, and you can make them on any machine that runs and has a CD burner.

a prompt to xcopy.  (The Acer can boot from a USB Cd.)
You can. IIRC, you'd need to format the thumb drive with the ISO image. Xcopy will not do the job.

Or, you could try to fix wifey's machine, or at least get it bootable.
Cannot boot the machine; that is the problem; error is
  "Hive Is Missing or Damaged"
I know. That doesn't mean it's not fixable.


Then you could use Windows' migration tools to save the data.
Does this appear if I run the WXP Pro install CD?
No idea, but I think not. Also, it might only work in XP Pro, not Home. But Lenovo has tools for doing the same thing.
