Apparently that's the way it is, just as with the dimness of the X220 LEDs relative to other ThinkPads. The only LED on the panel that blinks with activity is the one for the HDD.

I'm also accustomed to different behavior with the battery status LED on most other ThinkPads. The X220 doesn't even have one on the screen bezel or elsewhere inside, and the one outside on the lid goes to green long before the battery is fully charged.

Even with those minor quirks it's still a great machine.
