Hello,

From what I recall, Microsoft Windows 2000 would perform some amount of
hardware detection on boot up and load the various drivers for devices it
found, while Windows XP and later don't perform the same level of detection/
enumeration in order to speed up the boot process--the operator (or Windows
Update) is supposed to install any necessary third-party drivers. The
benefit to the latter being, I would imagine, a faster boot process.

Did you install the new hard disk drive into your ThinkPad T60 and place
the failing hard disk drive into your eSATA dock? I have read that the
preferred way to clone a ThinkPad is with the new HDD installed into the
computer.

Lo,

As the list may remember i am trying to clone my failing t60 Thinkpad
HDD to a new HDD.
I did a full disk clone image of the hard drive in one go from the
failing HDD to an image on
my Desktop using Macrium reflect

I then proceeded to reimage using my e-SATA external dock onto the on
to the new HDD.
Then the first problem arose bizarrely Macrium reflect doesn't allow
a full in one go disk
image restore! :(

I had to restore each of the 4 partitions one by one.

On insertion into my t60 windows xp boots past the "knight riders"
progress bar and onto
the xp splash screen were it sticks with no HDD activity but the
trackpoint works.
Safe mode doesn't work either.

However my w2k OS install (2nd partition) boots up fine with only the
odd symptom that
the screen resolution is set to 640 480 on first boot since changed
to 1280 1024.

Is xp more heavily protected by Microsoft than w2k and this is the
reason i am not
allowed to image to another drive?
Any other reason why it didn't work?

thanks for your time

Martin N
