(1) Windows XP Pro on a T43p will boot from a HDD in a USB connected
enclosure. While preparing a Western Digital WD3200BEVE 320GB 5400 RPM
2.5 ATA-6 hard drive in a Nippon Labs 2.5 IDE-USB External Enclosure to
replace the original Hitachi 80GB, I booted from the USB 2.0 connected
drive several times. I also booted that drive while it was connected with
a Vantec SATA-IDE to USB adapter.

(2) After checking, I found that a number of sites dedicated to bootable
images for USB connected Flash drives have disappeared. Here are some:
   (a) Kevin's Blog

         http://kmwoley.com/blog/?p=345#more-345
         The article provides *step-by-step instructions*.

   (b) Kevin's Blog article--(a) above--has also been updated to note
that:
"EDIT 2009/12/11: **Microsoft Provides a tool to do this for you

         <

If you need instructions on how to use the tool, see the Microsoft
Store Help on the ISO-Tool (http://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool)."

(for Windows)
UNetbootin allows you to create bootable Live USB drives for
Ubuntu, Fedora, and other Linux distributions without burning a CD. It runs
on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. You can either let UNetbootin download one
of the many distributions supported out-of-the-box for you, or supply your
own Linux .iso file.
         Requirements
         * Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7, or Linux, or Mac OS X 10.5+.
Note that resulting USB drives are bootable only on PCs (not on Macs).
         * Internet access for downloading a distro to install, or a
pre-downloaded ISO file
         *unetbootin-windows-568.exe 4644KB*

   (g) WinToFlash
         http://wintoflash.com/home/en/
WinToFlash starts a wizard that will help pull over the contents
of a windows installation CD or DVD and prep the USB drive to become a
bootable replacement for the optical drive. It can also do this with your
LiveCD.
         *Novicorp WinToFlash 0.7.0034 beta.zip 9157KB*

Hope some of these help.
