If I were you, I'd partition the drive using a Linux bootdisk, make sure
the main partition starts at a 4K boundary, then install Windows XP on it
as-is. Start the main partition at sector 1024 and give it a partition ID
of 7. When the partition table is written, reboot, and boot the Windows CD.
