Most external CD readers can read off a single USB cable, even if they require a paired cable for power for writing. However, the suggestion to try another port is a good one. If it doesn't work on that port, I would also try it on another computer (to see if the drive has failed), and would also try some other USB device on the laptop (we keep a USB floppy drive around, it is great for testing ports).
