Most external CD readers can read off a single USB cable, even if they 
require a paired cable for power for writing.  However, the suggestion to 
try another port is a good one.  If it doesn't work on that port, I would 
also try it on another computer (to see if the drive has failed), and would 
also try some other USB device on the laptop (we keep a USB floppy drive 
around, it is great for testing ports).

Is your CDROM drive powered by itself, or does it use USB power? If USB
power, does it have a double cable that goes into two ports? If not, have
you tried a different USB port in case the polyfuse on the one you were on
opened?
