The drive itself could be bad.

Thanks Dave and Alex it seems to be sorted now.

I tried another external dvd rom and it worked straight off leaving me
perplexed.
So it could be down to a dodgy cable,flakey booting on the x61?
or some other weird thing to do with the orig dvd rom which originally
worked.

Off to see if i can set it up with just the system update downloading the
drivers itself.
