[off-topic list question]

Did I somehow miss the parent topic to this thread or is the list having problems? I don't recall anything prior to this apparent multiple reply. Anybody else have similar issues?

FWIW, none of those commands worked on my X32 running XP (from

All returned the same message:

Hello,

My initial thought is that some call-handling protocol may have been
initiated after a rampant number of ThinkPad-in-dock thefts or something
odd like that.

One way to determine the model number of a ThinkPad is to open a Command
Prompt (filename: CMD.EXE) and issue *either* of the following commands:

   c:\windows\system32\wbem\wmic.exe baseboard get product

   c:\windows\system32\wbem\wmic.exe csproduct get name

This will or at least, should return the model number. To obtain the
serial number, use *either* of the following commands:

   c:\windows\system32\wbem\wmic.exe bios get serialnumber

   c:\windows\system32\wbem\wmic.exe csproduct get identifyingnumber

If you are running Microsoft Windows Vista or newer, remember to open an
elevated command prompt, otherwise, you may receive an error message or
be prompted to enter the administrator account's password in order to run
the command.

Aryeh Goretsky
