Hello,

I got the last 2 Crucial 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800 CL11 modules at the local
Microcenter. The laptop had a Samsung 4GB DDR3 PC3-12800 CL11 module.

I wanted dual channel so I decided to go up to 16GB. I suppose this means I
should go from 16GB up to 32GB on my main desktop. :) 16GB maybe overkill
anyway, but it was a cheap upgrade. The memory setup is like my other recent
Thinkpads. The installed memory was in the slot under the keyboard and the free
slot is behind the memory door on the bottom. Removing the keyboard to access
the installed memory was actually easier than my z60t or T61. There are only
two screws on the bottom and the keyboard is like a tray that is slid back to
unlatched the front, then up and forward. The user guide outlines the procedure.

I had a question about what size SSD to put in as the specs say 7mm or 9.5mm. I
got the free 500GB upgrade. The drive used is a 7mm 3.0Gb/s SATA with an
existing FRU number of 42T1223. The drive label has a Lenovo Part number of
42T1372 and Hitachi 0J26105. I cannot find information on those two numbers,
only on a similar Hitachi 0J26005.

I have a 9.3mm Octane SSD that I did a fit test and it will fit into the HD
cavity. The original HD has the typical metal tray with rubber side pieces. The
rubber pieces have slots the tray (with drive) go into. The rubber pieces have
built-in spacers on the top side and it appears a different set of rubber
pieces are used for 9.5mm drives.

So if I go with a 9.5mm SSD then I either eliminate the rubber pieces or get a
set of rubber pieces for 9.5mm drives. There is a foam strip on the drive door
so I might be able to get away with just using the tray to get the pull tab.

I need to do some more experimenting.

up a day. I thought I might arrive early, as it was in Kentucky last Sunday
after a speedy trip through Alaska. I did not realize that customs clearance
happens in Kentucky, and this took two days. I was reading some horror stories
of shipments stuck there for weeks, but it cleared yesterday, and arrived this
morning.

Yeah, my T420s spent most of a week there, arrived on a Monday as a result.
(I had sure been hoping to tinker that weekend! Sometimes I think being able to
track packages is a *bad* thing.)

but so far I like it. I got a FHD 1920x1080 screen and the text is not too
small. The screen is bright and not glossy. I have not typed on the keyboard
much yet, but it has a good feel so far. I did not get the backlighted
keyboard. It does have a Thinklight. I got a 9 cell battery and it looks
similar to the extended battery I use on the T61.

We ordered a T530 for my wife last night, with the backlit keyboard. Got the
lower-res screen because she's on a 1024x768 now and doesn't want things any
smaller than they have to be (we be getting' on in years, ya know).

I'll upgrade the memory (Lenovo wants $160 for a DIMM I can get from Crucial
for $25 -- that's insane). Otherwise she'll use it as is. I do get to install
her applications and move her data, o joy (not that I mind, but she's still a
Eudora user, and Eudora is stupid about attachments and embedded graphics, so
there are a couple of directories with 30K++ files in 'em).
