I just ran into this issue. I agree that the behavior should be to throw a
deserialization error. Part of the usefulness of unions is the guarantee that
they always have exactly one field in all cases. If you want the behavior that
David describes, where the object is empty if the field is missing, then you
should use a struct instead of a union IMO. Alternatively, there could be a
"nullable-union" alternative to union that is allowed to be empty.
