Hi,
Would someone please educate me on the need for the Webmail extension
for Gmail?
I can understand needing it for Yahoo and Hotmail but Thunderbird
users can setup Gmail directly through File > New > Account > Gmail so
why the need for the extension? I'm not questioning the purpose of the
extension itself, just for the need to use the Gmail extension.

If it's to handle multiple Gmail accounts, that can be done in
Thunderbird or through Gmail settings (up to 5 additional addresses in
Gmail), plus Gmail email can be forwarded to other addresses and
finally there is POP and IMAP for Gmail in Thunderbird.

Again, I'm mostly curious and if people are experiencing problems with
Webmail - Gmail, they may be doing it needlessly unlike needing
Webmail - Yahoo and Hotmail.
