These extensions to Thunderbird exist to provide conversion of emails
delivered via html (in a Web browser) to/from POP/SMTP which is the
communication method needed by Thunderbird.  Yes, they are effectively
scaping HTML and the POP/SMTP settings are essential to allow the
extension to communicate with Thunderbird.

As far as Thunderbird is concerned these extensions are acting as POP
and SMTP servers.
