I was getting th negative vibes message and installing the newest version (b44) didn't help.
What fixed the problem for me was logging onto hotmail.com. When I first logged on, there was a message about new hotmail look/features. After I clicked don't show me, just go to inbox, the hotmail extension in Thunderbird started working again.
