I could not get Thunderbird to download or send e-mails like (almost?)
everyone else when Microsoft messed up Hotmail, but it still did not
work for me when people on this group started reporting some success.
I found out that if I changed localhost to 127.0.0.1 in Thunderbird's
server and SMTP settings, then it worked (with b49).

This is very weird, because my C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
(Windows Vista) file has this line:

127.0.0.1 localhost

Is something messed up in one of the add-ons regarding name resolution
on Windows?

I'm using WebMail 1.3.3b3 and WebMail - Hotmail 1.2.19b49.
