Chris ... The "download unread emails only" should not be needed to prevent re- downloads. This option causes the Hotmail extension to only return to Thunderbird the list of messages marked unread in the Hotmail Inbox instead of the full list of messages on the server as required by the POP protocol. It is required to be used with the "Mark messages as read" option. It means that the messages, once read, will disappear from the popstate.dat and using this option prevents any deletions in Thunderbird form being reflected back to the Hotmail server.
The re-downloads of Hotmail have been due to a problem where the extension has been returning only the list of the first 50 messages on the Hotmail server to Thunderbird even if there are more than 50 messages on the server. As the user deletes messages older messages bounce around the 50th message mark and come in and out of the popstate.dat. As the older messages appear in the popstate.dat they get downloaded. Newer messages arrive and the older messages move above the 50 message mark and disappear from the popstate.dat. Then the users deletes some messages ... and around and around it goes. The use of the "download unread messages only" option is a circumvention of this (temporary) problem with the Hotmail extension. This truncation of the list appears to have been fixed with b53.
