That makes complete sense logically. However, when it comes to doing
it, I'm lost.

I went to Hotmail>Accounts>View settings for this account>Account
Settings, and found (at the bottom) SMTP is set for "Webmail -
localhost" and that my only choices are Webmail - localhost (2
iterations) and Webmail - localhost (Default). I found that Yahoo is
set the same way, apparently.

BTW, I don't think I set the Hotmail settings; I think they set
themselves when I installed the Hotmail extension (but that didn't
happen with Yahoo).

So the questions are, 1. Do I need to get rid of one or more of the
Webmail - localhost iterations, and if so, how? and 2. What do I set
the Yahoo to and how?
