There are other reasons for this problem to occur. If you want chapter and verse on how the process works and where it can break I can give it to you. The problems tat can occur when keeping large volumes of mail in the server Inbox are not confined to these extensions and can also happen in good old fashioned real POP accounts.
It really is not a good idea to keep all that mail in the Inbox. It makes a large overhead for the extension to work on every time you go to get your mail. If you want to keep that mail on the server then it would be best to create a custom folder on Hotmail and move the vast bulk of the messages you want to keep there into the custom folder and, periodically, as the Inbox grows to move more to the custom folder. You can stop the problem right now by doing this. There is another, rather ugly, alternative. In the Hotmail extension set the "Download only unread messages". The problems with this are that you will not download any messages you have read in the Web interface and that you will not be able to have any deletions made in Thunderbird replicated back to the Hotmail server.
