Thanks for the reply but I have fixed it now using the advice given by 
replies to other postings.

My hosts file had been changed. It seems an update (presumably to Vista) 
did this somehow, and it is enfuriating that Microsoft should do this. I 
found changing the server to 127.0.0.1 didnt work so I may have 
misunderstood that but editing the hosts file worked. In summary edit 
the file (assuming default directory structure):

C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

add the line:

127.0.0.1            localhost

I had this in the backup copy of my hosts file so I know it wasn't me 
that deleted it. I advise you to make a backup of the hosts file before 
you edit it just to be on the safe side.
