Nick, actually AOL historically has utilized IMAP. At this point in time older accounts that were/are set up with their IMAP email service can be accessed using either wwwmail (via a www browser) or an email client that supports IMAP.
A few years ago when they introduced free email accounts with email domain names other than aol.com they limited access to those "other domain" accounts to wwwmail access only, that is, no IMAP access. I would expect that those accounts are actually being maintained on the same mail server farms that support the IMAP interface/protocols accounts mentioned above however there is no way (that I know of at least) to get at them using an IMAP capable mail client such as Thunderbird.
