You can usually access Gmail in Thunderbird without needing the
extensions. Google provides free POP and IMAP access, check Gmail's help
pages for details. If you want to read mails and leave a copy on Gmail's
servers, the IMAP option is probably best for you.
You can use the extensions to read mail from other web mail systems such
as Hotmail and Yahoo, and Thunderbird will allow multiple accounts to be
set up. Hotmail and Yahoo don't offer IMAP access, the extensions will
emulate a POP server, by default Thunderbird, (or any other POP
compliant email program) will download mails and delete them from the
server. There is a check box in TB's server settings for each email
account where you can specify that a copy be left on the server, if you
don't set this option before downloading any mails then mails will be
deleted from the server.
Also note that Hotmail now provides free POP access, most people will no
longer need web mail extensions in TB.
The main exception to being able to use free POP access is if you are
trying to get your mail in work, some employers have firewalls set to
prevent access to the ports used by Google and Hotmail for POP and IMAP.
Also Hotmail's POP access only downloads your Inbox (a limitation of the
POP protocol), using the web mail extension you can also download mails
from any folders you may have in Hotmail.
